Your first visit will consist of some paperwork to acquire relevant information regarding your health history. This health history will be reviewed with you by the doctor. A focused physical exam and thorough spinal evaluation will then be performed. If any further investigation is necessary such as x-rays or a Surface EMG, they will be obtained at this time. The findings of the history and exam will be formulated and discussed with you. Treatment may begin on your first visit or may begin after secondary test results are obtained.
Although some conditions are extremely painful in the acute phase, and may cause some discomfort during initial treatment, all care is taken to minimize discomfort and make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Regular chiropractic adjustments do not hurt at all, once through the acute phase.
Chiropractic is involved in the restoration of proper function of the central nervous system. The central nervous system controls and directs every function of every cell in the body. Essentially, chiropractic treats the body as a whole and focuses on promoting overall optimal health and wellness. So, whether your condition is musculoskeletal in nature or has to do with altered function of your organ systems, chiropractic can help.
The word “chiropractic” comes from the ancient Greek and means “done by hand”. Chiropractic today is one of the longest primary-contact heath care practitioners in the world. It is a non-invasive, drug free, hands on health care discipline that focuses on the evaluation, correction and maintenance of the spine and central nervous system. The primary goal of chiropractic is to promote overall health and well-being through a properly functioning nervous system. This is achieved through restoring proper alignment and motion into the individual spinal segments within the spine, thereby relieving pressure or interference to the associated nerves.
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest, drug free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of headache, neck and back pain. It has an excellent safety record, although no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. Even common over the counter medications carry a risk, some very serious. Most patients experience immediate relief following an adjustment. Any adverse effects associated with spinal adjustments are typically minor and short lived.
Although many medical doctors refer patients to chiropractors, a medical referral is not necessary. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health professionals in every province in Canada.
