Health exists when every part of your body is functioning properly. For this to happen, your brain must communicate openly and uninterrupted with the rest of your body. It must tell everything else what to do and when to do it. The brain achieves this through one of nature’s most remarkable and complicated communication networks. The Nervous System.
The brain controls and directs every other function of the body by sending signals called nerve impulses down the spinal cord and out to the rest of the body. These signals flow to every cell, gland and organ in the whole body. Just as important, all the organs and cells must send signals back to the brain via the same set of nerves.
All of these nerves at some point along their path pass through the spinal column. Small misalignments of the spinal bones can interfere with the transmission of nerve messages. These misalignments or restrictions are called Vertebral Subluxations. These subluxations occur as a result of all the stresses we put on our bodies on a daily basis. Subluxations cause interference to the normal transmission of messages (nerve impulses) to and from the brain. This in turn has detrimental effects on every aspect of one’s health. Chiropractors locate these areas of nerve interference and apply a specific, gentle thrust known as the chiropractic adjustment. This in turn frees the nerve impulses to be transmitted uninterrupted to the rest of the body, bringing about an improved state of health.
This healthier state of being, increases your body’s ability to adapt to its environment and helps deal with the many stressors we encounter. This translates into increased overall body performance as well as heightened resistance to diseases and improved ability for the body to maintain, heal, repair itself and in short, function better.
The crazy part of what I have just written about is that all this may be happening and subluxations can exist without any outward symptoms at all. I am constantly being told, ‘I didn’t come back because I felt better.’ This is a product of the mis-education over the years that if we feel fine, we are healthy. This just simply is not true. The absence of obvious symptoms certainly does not mean the presence of health. True health is not directly related to how you feel but to how you function. That is one enormous difference.
The timeline is usually something more like this: 1. Subluxation occurs. 2. Time passes (usually without symptoms) and the body tries to fight back and compensate for the subluxations. 3. Outward symptoms appear. Some people wait for the eruption of symptoms (the last step in the process) before they do anything for their health. This is extremely counter productive when these minor misalignments could be corrected long before they cause chronic negative adaptations in the body. This is why a spinal scan and evaluation by your chiropractor is so important regardless of how you feel. This should be priority not just for yourself but also your family and loved ones.
